Organisation Profile: Waitaki Turnaround has been operating since 2001. It offers restorative justice conferencing for both Police diversion and pre-sentence referrals within the Court based justice system. Conferences cater for the involvement of both victim/offender and community participation as appropriate to each case. The population served is over 20,000 residing within the 700,000 hectares of urban/rural environment of the Waitaki District. The district lies in North Otago with Oamaru as its main centre of population. It is bound by the Waitaki River to the north extending inland to the west beyond Omarama and then to Palmerston in the south. One part time Co-ordinator is employed who also facilitates the RJ conferences under a funding contract from the Ministry of Justice. Meetings with other South Island RJ co-ordinators are held from time to time throughout the year for training and updating purposes. 20 volunteers offer their services to participate on community panels as required. Administrative support is given by the Waitaki District Council and a strong relationship has been build up with the Police, Court and legal representatives to secure the best out comes for restorative justice in the area.
